This is a translation into English of Renee Vivien's adaptation into French of Sappho's original Greek.
Renee Vivien (nee Pauline Mary Tarn (1877-1909 A.D.), a lesbian writer who lived and worked in Paris during the Belle Epoque, adapted fragments of Sappho and Nossis into French. Sappho (b. 630-612, d. 570 B.C.) was a Greek lyric poet of the city of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. Nossis (c. 300 B.C.) was a Greek epigrammist of Locri, in southern Italy.
Samantha Pious, who has translated Renee Vivien's adaptations into English, is a graduate student in Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania and an alumna of Bryn Mawr College.
