DoubleSpeak Staff on translating Wang Anshi (王安石)

about the author

Wang Anshi (王安石) was a Chinese economist, philosopher, poet, and politician of the Northern Song Dynasty. As a leading advocate of the controversial New Policies socio-economic reform movement, he sought to strengthen the economy through government regulation and social welfare. His poetry, written in the shi (诗) form, often features themes of social inequality while adhering to traditional observations of nature. Wang’s literary style in both poetry and prose is marked by clarity, restraint, and moral purpose, complementing his legacy as a key figure in both Chinese literature and political thought.
